Roy Keane proved he was right on Man Utd goalkeeper David de Gea after Everton howl

Roy Keane slammed Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea ahead of the Red Devils' FA Cup third round clash with Everton and the former Old Trafford captain got it right in the first half when Conor Coady has punished an embarrassing blunder from the Spaniard. The hosts took an early lead when £86million summer signing Antony was on hand to tap home at the far post after excellent work from Marcus Rashford.

But United's 1-0 lead was short-lived as Everton leveled things through the England international centre-back, who was the fox in the box for the Toffees under fire from Frank Lampard.

The ball was clipped by striker Neal Maupay and De Gea struggled to keep it out of the danger zone as it weaved between his legs and onto the face of the empty goal.

Coady was on hand to tap home in gratitude and Everton simply couldn't believe their luck following De Gea's horror mistake after enduring a nightmarish start at Old Trafford.

Ahead of kick-off, ruthless pundit Keane was asked about United's return to form, but he refused to jump on the bandwagon with his former side, instead criticizing some of the flaws that he still thinks he's there on Erik ten Hag's side.< /p>

De Gea has been identified as a weak link by Keane, who told Mark Pougatch: "No, not really, I'll be honest with you [was he impressed with United].

"They're on a roll and they've beaten teams recently, but they haven't really faced anyone. They haven't really faced anyone.

"Of course they have City in a few weeks and Arsenal of course, but I'm still not convinced.

"I still think the issues are there with the centre-backs, I'm still not convinced with the goalkeeper. They are better than obviously last year which wouldn't have been difficult."< /p>

De Gea's long-term future at United remains uncertain, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

United are believed to be considering the possibility of replacing their No.1 this summer after another mixed campaign.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland has been loaned out to replace Martin Dubravka, who has returned to Newcastle after an unsuccessful loan spell.

Ten Hag has since taken the time to explain his decision, saying he can't afford to take the risk of having only two senior goalkeepers.

“Martin [Dubravka] has been recalled and now to equip us we need three experienced goalkeepers, we have youngsters and they are doing well,” Ten Hag said on Thursday.

"But we have so many games, so you need three good goalkeepers in training, but also when problems arise, you need experience in goal to achieve your goals, which you take aim.

"Last year I had a situation with Ajax where we had three injured goalkeepers, and you don't want a position where you play for trophies, and you have to put in a young keeper, you can't expect it, and also kills your season."

United are also exploring the January transfer market for another forward signing as they look to replace Cristiano Ronaldo following his transfer to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
