Rudi Koertzen: Former South African referee dies in car crash

A family spokesperson told AFP news agency that he died from injuries sustained during the of Monday's accident.

Koertzen played 108 Test matches as a referee between 1992 and 2010.

The South African players wore black armbands during their warm-up match against the Lions of England on Tuesday and will do so again for the first Test against England at Lord's next week.

He retired from refereeing in 2010 after a test between Australia and Pakistan in Leeds following a career that saw him officiate in 332 internationals.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the sport's legislators, tweeted: "MCC is deeply saddened to learn the death of Honorary Life Member and former referee, Rudi Koertzen. Our thoughts are with his friends and family."
