Ukraine: Emergency services attend scene of missile attack

Russian forces have launched at least 60 missile strikes across Ukraine in one of the worst attacks since the start of the war.

Incredibly, a Kyiv soldier managed to shoot down a cruise missile with only his machine gun, but at least two people were killed in the assault.

Kyiv officials say the Ukrainian capital withstood "one of the biggest rocket attacks" launched by Russian forces since their invasion nearly a decade ago.

Commanders in Moscow are believed to want to destroy as much of Ukraine's infrastructure as possible before Ukraine receives a new battery of Patriot defense rockets from the United States.

Muted explosions and gunfire from air defense systems echoed across Ukraine as Moscow targeted Kyiv, southern Kryvyi Rih, southeast Zaporizhzhia and northeast Kharkiv earlier in the day.

Air raid alarms have sounded across the country, warning of a new barrage of Russian strikes that have come on and off since mid-October.

Further waves of Iranian-made Shahed-136 kamikaze drones were expected as night fell and air defense teams prepared to try and shoot down missiles.

Most of the projectiles fired were cruise missiles, but the Russian attackers also fired S-300 missiles originally intended for surface-to-air defenses.
