Saudi Arabia to withdraw from 2030 World Cup, reports say

23 June - Saudi Arabia is no longer in contention to host the 2030 World Cup and will focus on 2034 instead, according to a Spanish newspaper.

The Saudis have long been linked with a joint offer with Greece and Egypt for 2030, but Marca claim interest has been withdrawn as the trio consider it impossible to match the backed counter-bid by UEFA from Spain, Portugal and Morocco.< /p>

There has also been a growing feeling among federation presidents, who will be voting for the next host, that if this were another World Cup in the Middle East, it would probably have to be replayed at the end of the year (rather than the traditional June-July slot) and that it is too soon after the Qatar 2022 World Cup to bring this type of reconfiguration to the global football calendar again.

A South American quartet made up of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay is also in the running for the centenary of the competition.

The winning bid will be announced in September 2024
