Schmeichel leaves Leicester a legend as he ends his 11-year tenure to join French side Nice

Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has signed for Ligue 1 club Nice, ending his 11-year spell at Leicester City.

The 35-year-old has won the Championship, a Premier League title, an FA Cup and the Community Shield with the Foxes. He also helped the club reach the Champions League quarter-finals in 2016/17.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: "Throughout his journey with us, and particularly as captain and vice-captain, Kasper has always been a player ready to step up and take on his duties. responsibilities, leading the team with distinction.

"His influence and leadership on and off the pitch speaks volumes about him as a professional, as a football player and as a human being.

"I know the Leicester City supporters share the respect we all have for a player of Kasper's stature after all his achievements as a footballer and captain and will join me in wishing him the best for the next stage of his career in France with OGC Nice.

"It is clear to anyone who has seen him play that Kasper has given his all to Leicester City every time he has played and the experiences shared between him, the club and our supporters over the past 11 years means that he will always remain a part of this family."

Danish international Schmeichel joined the Foxes from Leeds in 2011 and played a pivotal role throughout the most successful period in the club's history.

He has made 478 appearances for the Premier League club and will replace Walter Benitez at Nice following the Argentine's move to PSV.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers will now have a choice between Danny Ward and compatriot Daniel Iversen ahead of his side's league opener against Brentford this weekend.

The Foxes are the only Premier League side yet to sign with the first team during the summer transfer window.

Schmeichel's £1million transfer won't fund a big deal, but they are expected to bring in a new 'keeper'.

They have been linked to Benfica's Odysseas Vlachodimos, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.

Benfica are believed to be asking between €15m and €20m for the 28-year-old Greek.

Vlachodimos has recorded 65 clean sheets in 169 games in all competitions for the Lisbon side.

Another goalkeeper they have been linked with is Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont.

The 23-year-old is one of France's most promising goalkeepers and enjoyed an excellent 21/22 season. It should cost around 20 million euros.
