Several dead in Denmark after shooting in Copenhagen shopping center

Police said one person was in custody but it was too early to suggest a motive for the shooting, which happened produced at Field's shopping center on Sunday.

Several people were killed and injured in a shootout at a Copenhagen shopping center on Sunday, local police said.

Soren Thomassen of Copenhagen police did not specify the number of people killed, and he declined to provide details on a motive, saying it was too soon . No information on the conditions of the injured was made available.

He said police had arrested a 22-year-old Dane in connection with the shooting. Police said they have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person was involved in the shootings.

"We have multiple deaths and injured," Thomassen told a press conference at police headquarters that was briefly punctuated by sirens in the background.

"As you can clearly hear it, it's busy," he said. "What happens in a tragic event is that we respond on multiple fronts."

The shooting occurred at Field's, the largest mall in Denmark.

< p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Videos and images posted to social media showed people exiting the mall and ambulances lining its exterior. Armed police were running near the mall and a helicopter hovered overhead.

A mall worker told local media that "mass of people" ran for take refuge in Kentucky Fried Chicken at Field's. Staff members barricaded the doors and stayed there for about 45 minutes, the employee said.

Eyewitness Mahdi Al-Wazni told TV 2 News that he saw the shooter.

"He seemed violent and angry, and he was screaming as he ran and took the gun and smashed the windows" , he said. “You would think it was an action movie as it walked. He seemed very proud of what he did, I could tell."

Other eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and employees helping customers to flee through the back rooms of the stores.
