Shocking! The surreal world of Elsa Schiaparelli opens at the Museum of Decorative Arts

The line between fashion and art has always been blurred, whether it's Salvador Dali's jewelry or the Met Gala red carpet. In 2022, we are comfortable with designers and/or artists whose work fortunately exists undefined somewhere in the middle of these categories. When Elsa Schiaparelli created her work at the beginning of the 20th century, she was clearly ahead of her time. Freed from the confines of high society, Schiaparelli worked alongside the Parisian avant-garde to create garments that pushed the boundary between what is a garment and what is a wearable work of art. Fittingly, Paris Couture Week for Fall-Winter 2023 kicks off with a new exhibition of the avant-garde couturier's work. From July 6, 2022 to January 22, 2023, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris invites visitors to discover Schiaparelli's work with Shocking! The surreal world of Elsa Schiaparelli.

This retrospective brings together 272 silhouettes and accessories by Schiaparelli alongside paintings, sculptures, jewelry, perfumes, ceramics, posters and photographs by artists from the Parisian avant-garde of the 20s and 30s. Schiaparelli's friends and contemporaries in this show include Man Ray, Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Meret Oppenheim and Elsa Triolet.

Schiaparelli and Dalí collaborated on an evening dress with a large lobster print on the front which is visible in the exhibition.

The exhibition begins chronologically with themed rooms including the Pagan Collection, the Butterfly Collection and the Music Collection, as well as a reconstruction of Schiaparelli's couture salon. The show ends with a contemporary piece created by Daniel Roseberry, the creative director of the Schiaparelli house. This finale highlights how the influence of Elsa Schiaparelli gave the brand a distinct voice and direction that has remained clear to this day. Since couture is all about showcasing the best in craftsmanship and handmade haute couture, there's no better tribute than to one of the OG couturiers who set the standard for a fashion that has pushed the limits. If you're in Paris this year, or just a fashion lover, be sure to add this show to your to-do list!
