A skier falls into an ice fissure

A skier counts on his blessing for surviving a horrific skiing accident when he fell into a huge crevasse in France.

The man escaped death by getting his skis stuck in the snow and ice and the entire ordeal, including his slide into the abyss, was captured on his GoPro.

The anonymous man was able to use the pickaxe and crampons to climb out of the insane crevasse as his friends descended a rope to help him.

He has decided to remain anonymous for fear of upsetting his family.

"He was really very lucky", Thibaut Arnould, a friend of the French skier who was there at the time of the incident,

He continued, "It was the longest 20 minutes of our lives for us who were far up on the ski lift and had to wait until we were high enough to be able to rescue him."

The accident happened on the mountain of La Meije, known for its off-piste and extreme skiing, which overlooks the village of La Grave in .

Mr. Arnould said he estimated the fall to be at least 15 meters, but it went even further beyond the serac [a block or column of glacial ice] that can be seen in the video.

The skier had left alone before a dozen companions, men and women, joined him and secured him with a rope.

In the video, he slides for several seconds before muttering a French expletive, exhaling, and removing his backpack to retrieve his climbing gear...
