SNK creates its first new Fatal Fury game in 23 years

Many classic fighting game series have a reasonably consistent flow of sequels, but not Fatal Fury — the latest title (Garou: Mark of the Wolves) hit Neo Geo in 1999. SNK is ready to make amends after 23 years, however. The developer has confirmed work on a new Fatal Fury game. The trailer below doesn't reveal anything about gameplay, plot, platform support, or release date, but the company has claimed the sequel will represent a "new twist" in fighters - only so you don't expect a lot of humility.

The franchise has played an important role in the history of SNK, and by extension fighting games as a whole. The first game, 1991's Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, caused a stir at a time when Street Fighter II was dominating the genre. It was designed by Takashi Nishiyama of the first Street Fighter, and focused more on story and special moves than SF2 combos. This showed that there was room for multiple games in the upper pantheon of fighting games and eventually spawned the still-running King of Fighters series.

The challenge, of course, is to persuade players to revisit Fatal Fury. The world of fighting games has evolved significantly over the past two decades, ranging from 3D series like Tekken to multi-character extravaganzas like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It's a crowded arena, and there's no certainty nostalgia will give SNK an advantage.
