Religious leaders of a town in Cornou ailles have called for a statue to be removed or renamed due to its 'spiritual significance'. was installed in St Austell in June to "celebrate the heritage of the territory".
A letter was sent by seven religious leaders to the city council, saying the statue was "offensive to God".
Richard Pears, former mayor of the city, said there were no plans to remove it or change its name.
The 36ft (11m) tall statue is part of a project to regenerate St Austell, which once had a thriving porcelain clay industry.
The letter stated that the rulers of the city were, though probably unknowingly, choosing to reject God and instead bring the city under the spiritual influence of an 'earth goddess'". would ask that you consider making significant changes to the statue…or at the very least have the name changed so that it is an abstract piece of art with no spir element itual. ng the statue."
