Olympic legend Adam Peaty today slammed the Tories for a dire lack of investment in basic sports facilities.

Britain's most successful swimmer has asked No10 to stop closing swimming pools and leisure centers and fund them properly to improve the nation's health and produce our future stars.

Following England's victory in women's football at Euro 22 and their own 50m gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this week, Adam said: "It has to be a platform.

"We really need those in power to stop closing pools and facilities. We should hold government and councils accountable to ensure we invest in facilities across the country.

Thanks to National Lottery players, over £40million has been donated to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, helping national team athletes train and compete.

These include visually impaired para-triathlete Oscar Kelly, 21. Funding from the National Lottery allows him to buy the special kit he and his guide need.

Wheelchair racer Melanie Woods, 27, says the support allows her to compete at an elite level.

And traveling abroad for training has been made possible for 16-year-old table tennis prodigy Anna Hursey.

"We have to think about people's mental health and well-being.

"People have trouble dealing with life and their emotions.
