Justice Secretary Alex Chalk has launched an independent investigation after a suspected terrorist escaped from prison by 'clinging onto a delivery van'.

Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, a former soldier accused of terrorism, disappeared on Wednesday in his cook's uniform at HMP Wandsworth. It is feared the fugitive – reported missing at 8am on Wednesday – is trying to flee the country. It was reported that he escaped from a prison kitchen by clinging to a delivery van.

Mr. Chalk told the House of Commons: "I have asked that the preliminary findings be with me by the end of this week, and an assessment will then be made as to what can be properly put into the public domain. I I have also decided that it will be necessary to conduct a further independent investigation into this incident and that it will take place in due course." Mr Chalk said he would leave "no stone unturned" to find out how it happened.

He added, "Who was on duty that morning, in what roles from the kitchen to the prison gates? What protocols were in place, were they followed secondarily? I ordered a investigation into the HMPPS (Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service) categorization decision.Have all relevant issues been considered in determining where Daniel Khalife should be held in the custody estate?
