“Things are a little different here…Most people deal with this stuff among themselves.” IFC Films has released the first official trailer for God's Country, a neo-thriller -independent western filmmaker Julien Higgins. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and it received rave reviews, although it mostly flew under the radar during the festival. The title refers to the land it takes place on - Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a black teacher living and working in a rural town in the snowy lands of the American West. When this grieving college professor confronts two hunters she catches encroaching on her property, she is drawn into a battle of wills that escalates with catastrophic consequences for everyone. It's a remarkably tense thriller with outstanding cinematography, but above all a commanding and magnificent performance from Newton. The independent cast includes Jeremy Bobb, Joris Jarsky, Jefferson White, Kai Lennox and Tanaya Beatty. It's a great independent film worth seeking out.
