"That '90s Show" Found the Perfect Jay Kelso in Mace Coronel

There is a new Kelso in power in Point Place, WI. In "That '90s Show," the Netflix spin-off "That '70s Show," viewers are introduced to a new generation of basement-dwelling teenagers, including new town comer Leia (Callie Haverda ), rebellious badass Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), sassy scene-stealer Ozzie (Reyn Doi), lip-tied lovebirds Nikki and Nate (Sam Morelos and Maxwell Donovan), and charming prankster Jay (Mace Coronel). At the series premiere, we learn that Jay isn't just any Jay; he is the son of Michael Kelso, portrayed by Ashton Kutcher in the original series. The father-son duo share a sweet moment when Kutcher makes an appearance in the first episode, highlighting just how amazing Coronel's casting really is.

While "That '90s Show" doesn't set out to recreate any characters from the OG series, the similarities between Jay and Michael are hard to ignore. For starters, Coronel looks like a young Kutcher, soft brown hair with a sweet smile. Beyond the physical attributes, Jay is just as goofy, lovable, and endearing as his dad and even shouts his signature "Burn!" hangs from time to time.

Coronel tells POPSUGAR that he prepared for the role by watching old episodes of "That '70s Show" to observe Michael and his on-screen mother, Jackie, played by Mila Kunis. "I studied both of my parents on the show," he says. "Biologically, we tend to adopt slight characteristics and mannerisms from our parents, so it was important for me to be able to apply this science to the character by studying."

"My parents told me not to walk in second-hand shoes, but rather to break my own."

When it came time to slip into his finest flannel and play Jay, Coronel didn't consider the big shoes he and his castmates were filling while starring in the reboot of such a beloved show . “My parents told me not to walk in second-hand shoes, but rather to break my own,” he says. "I've been playing since I was 7 and I'm rarely intimidated, only inspired to create and express." He says he really enjoyed his brief time on set alongside Kutcher, whom he bonded over a mutual love of jiu-jitsu.

Throughout the first season of "That '90s Show," Jay goes from suavely flirting with a gambler reputation to outright love falling in love with Leia, the most innocent member of their smoking circle . However, their relationship status is up in the air as Leia returns home to Chicago for the school year; after Jay breaks up with her to avoid going long distances, he quickly realizes his mistake and begs to make up. But there may be secret feelings between Leia and Nate, leaving her unsure of what to do next. Luckily, the series was recently renewed for a second season, so we'll see how the potential love triangle unfolds soon enough.

To celebrate Kelso's legacy, we've rounded up all the similarities between Jay and his dad, both in appearance and personality. Check out upcoming side-by-side comparisons and see Coronel in action on "That '90s Show," now streaming on Netflix.
