The Most Iconic MTV VMAs Looks of All Time

Another red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards is coming.

The MTV VMAs, which take place this Sunday, produced many memorable moments on the red carpet. Since debuting in 1984, the VMAs celebs have continually stunned fans and the red carpet with their head-turning outfits. From dresses in the back to snakes as accessories, the VMAs perfectly captured the essence of the 1980s through to the early 80s.

During the 2010s, the VMAs became an awards show that offered a more elevated array of outfits, with long, ethereal dresses and skin-tight two-pieces.

Plus, some celebrities even paid homage to other people's famous outfits. In 2014, Amber Rose wore a halter dress in homage to the see-through dress worn by Rose McGowan in 1998. The same year, Katy Perry and Riff Raff wore matching all-denim outfits in a nod to Britney Spears and Justin. Timberlake, who both wore Canadian tuxedos to the American Music Awards in 2001.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford wore an all-black bondage-inspired ensemble by Gianni Versace at the 1992 VMAs, a look that was later copied by her daughter, model Kaia Gerber, on her 18th birthday in 2019, and again by Dua Lipa at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Last year, Megan Fox, with fiancée Machine Gun Kelly by her side, wore a 'naked' Mugler dress that went viral on social media, sending the internet swooning on Twitter and Instagram.

The ceremony not only witnessed iconic fashion looks over the years, but also unforgettable celebrity encounters. Some of the memorable moments include Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera sharing a kiss on stage in 2003, Spears dancing with an albino Burmese python live in 2001 for her 2001 performance "I'm a Slave 4 U" and Miley Cyrus' sultry 2013 performance with Robin Thicke.

One moment that's still referenced in pop culture today is, of course, Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift onstage when she received the award for Best Female Video in 2009, saying, "Yo, Taylor , I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos ever! One of the best videos ever! West was referring to Beyoncé's music video "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)".

This year's MTV VMAs, hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, will take place on August 28 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. and will air at 8 p.m. HE.
