The Penguin: a spin-off series that will lead to The Batman 2

More information on the upcoming The Penguin series starring Colin Farrell has been shared, with director Matt Reeves revealing when the series is set in the world of The Batman.

Speaking to Collider recently, Reeves - who serves as an executive producer on the series - not only revealed that the series is set to begin production soon, but noted that the project will likely lead into the next sequel to The Batman.

"There's actually a whole little fabric of things that we want to do, the way we do with [the] Penguin and how that comes down to how that will lead to the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be,” Reeves said.

Previously, the overall timeline for The Penguin was also revealed, with HBO Max's Sarah Aubrey saying in a previous interview that the series would take place between the two films.

“Penguin will sit down immediately after The Batman ends and temporarily before the events of the second film. it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I'm not at liberty to say," Aubrey revealed in November.

"The point of this is to show what life in Oz is like, and it's really about the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and get up like only the Penguin can," said Aubrey. “As a hustler and strategist with his own ambitions. It's a great example of having time across eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with lots of delicious twists and new characters. It's really going to be Gotham on this street level, because it doesn't fly like Batman does. We all see this as a very specific experience for the audience."

The limited drama will be based on DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. It is written by Lauren LeFranc, who is also the showrunner. The first two episodes will be directed by Craig Zobel.
