The Predator's Most Famous Feature Came From The Mind Of James Cameron

Now that we have a brand new installment in 'The Predator' franchise, it will be interesting to see how much the creature's appearance will change. In the upcoming "Prey," viewers will be taken back roughly 300 years in Earth's history. From an evolutionary standpoint, especially with regards to the Yautja, there is some wiggle room for the special effects and costume team. Indeed, director Dan Trachtenberg told Time Out that he used the time setting as an opportunity to change the look of the Predator:

"I wanted [the Predator] to be scarier than we've seen before. He's smart and has advanced technology, which makes him even harder to face. set 300 years in the past, these things must feel a bit older than what we've seen before."

One thing that probably won't change too much, however, is their general physiology. Size, mandibles, hairy appendages; these distinctive physical traits removed in any way could cause riots from fans. While the Predator was mostly hiding in the latest "Prey" trailer, there was a brief moment where we got to see its physical form. The familiar dreadlocks are back, albeit in a more stylish way this roundup. As Trachtenberg explained, "I wanted to make sure the head was more in proportion to the body...This Predator is much leaner and less armored than it's ever been."

Although not shown, one thing is certain: these species-defining mandibles will be back to terrify us once again. And, as we now know, that's thanks to James Cameron, the man who continually finds his way - accidentally or otherwise - to all things extraterrestrial in Hollywood.
