Renfield's Trailer Includes Two Classic Dracula Easter Eggs

There's another bonus reference vampire movie fans may have noticed in the "Renfield" trailer, though this one isn't directly related to Tod Browning's "Dracula." This is actually a reference to one of Tod Browning's other classic vampire movies, in this case, the infamous silent film classic, "London After Midnight".

"London After Midnight" featured Lon Chaney Sr., "the man of a thousand faces" who used innovative make-up techniques to transform himself in his various horrifying images, into two distinct roles. He plays a detective investigating a mysterious murder, and he also plays - under heavy, grotesque makeup - a vampire with shark teeth and a top hat, whose face has fired the imagination of horror fans for a while. almost a century, although it seems they will never get the chance to see the real movie.

Tod Browning remade "London After Midnight" in 1935 as "Mark of the Vampire", reuniting him again with Lugosi. But Lon Chaney Sr.'s distinctive monster design didn't make the transition. However, the creators of "Renfield" seem keen to keep the shark-mouthed vampire design alive. Nicolas Cage's take on Dracula seems - at least visually - to have more in common with the "London After Midnight" vampire design than the original Universal Horror classic, with sharp teeth and a dapper top hat !
