'The Woman King' gets the perfect A+ CinemaScore

After weeks without many exciting new movie releases, Sony hopes Gina Prince-Bythewood's "The Woman King" can inject some energy into the box office. The Viola Davis-directed period epic was a crowd pleaser when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and early responses suggest it could enjoy similar success when it hits theaters. The film has officially received an A+ CinemaScore, revealing that audiences enjoy the film in America as much as they do in Toronto.

"The Woman King" is the 91st film to receive a perfect score from CinemaScore (prior to that, the most recent was "Top Gun: Maverick"). Since the poll is conducted with people who were already interested enough in the film to see it, a CinemaScore rating is widely considered a barometer of how well a film meets the expectations of its audience. Critically acclaimed films like Darren Aronofsky's "Mother" can receive low ratings (in this case, an F) if they deviate significantly from the genre of film promised by the marketing campaign. Similarly, films that receive less than enthusiastic responses from critics may receive high CinemaScore ratings if they meet audience expectations.

In this case, however, "The Woman King" deserves praise from audiences and critics alike. In her review of "The Woman King", IndieWire's Kate Erbland wrote that "the film is packed with standout elements: a lively, fully realized setting, stunning battle sequences (pushing that PG-13 rating to wild ends ), richly drawn characters and wonderful performances from everyone. Good luck picking an outstanding performance, because while Davis and [Thuso] Mbedu are the obvious draws, [Lashana] Lynch and Sheila Atim also do some supporting work at the creation of stars, while [John] Boyega goes off with a complicated portrayal of the young king, and Jayme Lawson steals the show every time she appears on screen as one of the most ambitious brides in Ghezo [Boyega]. If this is what a Hollywood blockbuster looks like in 2022, go for it."
