Drama group pulls off Sheffield's Crucible play on controversial musical

A theater company has released a play from Sheffield's Crucible in response to the staging of a musical criticized for its depiction of the Vietnamese people.

New Earth, a group of British East and Southeast Asian artists, said Miss Saigon contained "harmful tropes, misogyny and racism".

Its own production, Worth, was due ahead of the musical in June.

Sheffield Theatres, which manages the Crucible, said he respects the decision to cancel the play.

The venue's creative directors acknowledged "the divisive performance history " from Miss Saigon and "the upheaval it caused".

In a statement, they said they approached the new prod uction by being "sensitive" to the issue, adding that they "believe this is a chance for us to engage in a new way with a majority East and Southeast Asian society reframing the 'story'.
