Queen Elizabeth II: Theresa May shares a fun fact about cheese

Former Prime Minister Theresa May recalled the Queen's generous reaction when she made a serious misstep during a picnic at Balmoral.

Mrs May paid a moving tribute to the monarch during a special session in the House of Commons following the death of the 96-year-old at the Scottish castle yesterday.

She made a noise while "mingling" and transferring the cheese from the baskets onto the tables, only to accidentally knock it over.

To her horror, she realized that it had all been seen by the Head of State.

"The cheese fell on the floor. I had a decision to make in a fraction of a second", recalls the ex-Prime Minister with bursts of laughter.

"I picked up the cheese, put it on the plate and put it on the table. I turned around and saw that my every move had been watched very carefully by Her Majesty The Queen.

"I looked at her, she looked at me and she just smiled, and the cheese stayed on the plate."

Ms May described her weekly meetings with the Queen as 'special' and said she remembered the weekends at Balmoral fondly, saying: 'She was interested in the books placed in our bedrooms and she never didn't always want to be the center of attention."

She said her husband once dreamed he was being led around the Scottish royal residence by the Queen - only to find it was reality.

Ms May told the Commons: 'Queen Elizabeth II was quite simply the most remarkable person I have ever met.

During her Commons tribute, Maidenhead MP Ms May also recounted her weekly audiences with the monarch during her time as Prime Minister.
