Britons could be plunged into darkness this winter with the colder months ahead amid a cost of living crisis.

The National Grid previously warned UK homes that power cuts could become a reality as winter hits its peak and the weather turns freezing.

John Pettigrew, CEO of National Grids, said it was a 'worst-case scenario', but the government has nevertheless created contingency plans to deal with power outages.

These could last up to seven days in the event of a national power outage, as concerns grow over the security of supplies.

The government is currently testing the Yarrow program, a confidential plan put in place for power outages.

This predates the current energy crisis hitting millions of homes and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as it was created in 2021 to improve planning in the event of a major blackout on the national network.
