Man Utd thrifty and Arsenal reckless - Premier League's 2023 New Year's resolutions

New Year's resolutions are easy to make, but much harder to keep.

But to enjoy a prosperous 2023, it will be vital for some to change their habits in the next 12 months.

This doesn't apply to everyone, and Premier League champions Manchester City will be sitting comfortably even with some ground to catch up in the title chase.

For those hoping to match Pep Guardiola's men, however, Stats Perform have identified a few targets for 2023…

Save more money – Manchester United

The January sales make it difficult to save at this time of year, and Erik ten Hag has already expressed his desire to see a new striker signed before the end of the month.

But if United reflect on the past years, they might recognize that simply spending huge sums is no solution to their problems on the pitch.

In theory, Cristiano Ronaldo's departure left a hole, except he wasn't in the Ten Hag first team anyway. The United manager could be better served by making good use of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial rather than rushing to buy an unlikely player who is likely to be considerably better at a high cost.

Exercise more – Chelsea

A chilly January offers plenty of excuses not to race, but Chelsea would love to be able to put their key men to work. Instead, they too often got hurt.

N'Golo Kante remains absent, and Reece James and Ben Chilwell have missed much of the season. James returned this week but lasted just over 50 minutes before suffering another knee injury, while Wesley Fofana is also out again.

Chelsea will spend in January, but their hopes of recouping a Champions League charge will hinge on their ability to get existing players back into shape.

Learning a new skill - Darwin Nunez

Liverpool also have lingering injury problems, with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota still sidelined, but they should still have more than enough to really crack the top four.

While signing Cody Gakpo helps in that regard, Liverpool's season could be shaped by Nunez's ability to score consistently at this level.

Nunez is one of the Premier League's most prolific shot-stoppers, but he's repeatedly passed up big chances. This goalscoring talent isn't easy to learn, but Liverpool need their big pre-season signing to do just that.

Live your life to the full – Arsenal

Arsenal fans have spent years complaining about their team, without a league title since 2004 and without a title hope since 2016.

They are now firmly seated at the top of the chart heading into 2023, so now is the time to take advantage. There's no guarantee the Gunners will be able to hold off City - or Newcastle United - but it's been a memorable season already.

Even if Mikel Arteta's men slip away and simply secure a return to Champions League football, fans have to give it credit for the successful campaign this is.

Get Organized – Tottenham

If rival Spurs are to join Arsenal in Europe's elite club competition next season, they simply need to become more organized - not something you would necessarily associate with an Antonio Conte side.

Rather than post-Christmas congestion, Tottenham's biggest problem is their defence, repeatedly conceding cheap goals that give Harry Kane and Co a mountain to climb.

The quality of Kane, Son Heung-min and the others ensures that Spurs remain in the mix despite everything, but there is too much competition this season for Spurs not to be punished if they continue with these failures defensive.

Travel more – Newcastle United

Newcastle have emerged as surprise suitors this season - suitors for what exactly we and they aren't sure yet.

But despite all the bullish talk about a title boost or Champions League qualification, Newcastle simply need to secure European football now to continue their progress.

Although a goal that might have seemed optimistic at the start of the season, the Magpies cannot miss this dominant position, having to travel across Europe to keep Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman and attract talent just as exciting.
