Tony Awards issue 'non-violence' policy after Will Smith slap at Oscars

The Tony Awards producers have issued a "strict non-violence policy" following actor Will Smith's onstage slap at the Oscars.

"In the event of an incident, the author will be immediately expelled from the event," reads an excerpt from the letter published by the producers.

The new rule comes weeks after Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Smith won an Oscar, but was later banned from the Academy for 10 years.

"The Board has resolved, for a period of 10 years beginning April 8, 2022, that Mr. Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including, but not limited to the Oscars,” wrote AMPAS President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson.

Smith had already resigned.

"My actions during the presentation of the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all in attendance and a global audience at home. I have betrayed the trust of the Academy. I have deprived the fellow nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I I am heartbroken. I want to put the spotlight back on those who deserve recognition for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to look back on the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film."
