Fire bosses are being handed six-figure sums as firefighters face real-world pay cuts and 'in-work' poverty, a union said today.

Chief firefighters receive an average salary of £148,000, with the highest being £206,000, more than six times more than a regular firefighter, according to the firefighters union.

Firefighters and screening staff vote against industrial action after rejecting 5% pay rise as inflation hits 10.7%.

The result of the ballot is expected on January 30.

The FBU compared the salary of top fire chiefs to that of a 'competent full-time firefighter' who is paid £32,244.

Eleven fire chiefs are paid more than Prime Minister Rishi Sunak - 'and every fire chief in the country gets £100,000 or more', according to the FBU.

General Secretary Matt Wrack said: 'Firefighters and screening staff are facing another real world pay cut while fire chiefs are on huge salaries.

“FBU members increasingly face real working poverty, with firefighters having to rely on food banks and take on extra jobs to afford basic needs.

“At the same time, some fire chiefs are also trying to persuade firefighters and control personnel to back out of industrial action, to simply shut up about salaries several times lower than those of their bosses.< /p>
