Rishi Sunak has admitted the Tories may not win the next general election as Tory rebels have warned him to change political course following their local election defeats.

The Prime Minister is bracing for continued fallout following the weekend's local election results, which saw his party unexpectedly lose the West Midlands mayoral race to Labor.< /p>

But Mr Sunak said the UK was on course for a hung parliament. and claimed voters would not want to see Sir Keir Starmer “backed in Downing Street” by the SNP or smaller parties.

Mr. Sunak pointed to Sky News analysis of local election results which suggested Labor would be the largest party in a hung parliament, although voters in national polls tended to do so. behave differently, and fewer of them opt for smaller parties.

The analysis, by elections expert Michael Thrasher, said that if the party's seven-point lead Labor over the Conservatives in local elections was repeated in a general election there would be a hung Parliament. But people are unlikely to vote the same way in a general election, with Thursday's election results likely putting Labor on course for a clear majority.

“These results suggest we are heading towards a hung parliament, with Labor as the largest party,” Mr Sunak told The Times.
