Tory leadership race: Who is Penny Mordaunt?

The five candidates to become the next Conservative leader and the new UK Prime Minister prepare to take part in a live televised debate , as the stakes were raised when Penny Mordaunt claimed polls showed she was the only leadership candidate capable of defeating Labor in an election.

The performance of the five could influence the vote of other Tory MPs in the next round on Monday.

Ms Mordaunt said during an online election campaign: 'In every poll in our pa rti and the country, I'm in the lead."

She claimed that supporters of her rivals were trying to stop her from advancing to the final because they didn't want to run against her.

During the debate , hosted by Conservative Home, the five other Conservative leadership candidates presented differing approaches to the cost of living crisis, the war in Ukraine, restoring confidence and housing.

< p>Liz Truss pledged to cut the planned corporate tax hike from 19% to 25% next year in her pitch.

Ms Truss said: 'I would reverse the National Insurance hike, I opposed it in cabinet at the time because I thought it was a mistake, I think it's even more of a mistake now that we're facing such strong economic headwinds."
