Tory MPs have been told they risk 'doomsday' as Labor tries to hijack the Commons to force through legislation that will end the 'sewage scandal'.

The party will hold a binding vote tomorrow to determine whether to set aside time next week to debate the water quality bill it has crafted.

The legislation would impose automatic fines on companies found guilty of dumping waste into rivers and the sea, as well as new legally binding targets.

It would also make it mandatory to monitor all sewage outlets with penalties for non-compliance.

Labour has said it will give Tory MPs the chance to end sewage dumping 'once and for all'.

Shadow Environment Secretary Jim McMahon said: 'Clearly we have a Conservative government out of ideas, just regurgitating old announcements that do nothing to stop the dumping wastewater.

"That's why Labor has proposed legislation to clean up our water supply system.

"Tory MPs have an opportunity today to back Labor's Clean Water Bill, which will end the dumping of sewage once and for all.

"Their constituents will be watching to see if they are putting the best interests of our country before their party.".

The Liberal Democrats, who support the opposition Labor motion, said it was a 'judgment day for Tory MPs over the sewage crisis plaguing our coasts and rivers ".

Tim Farron, the party's environment spokesman, said: "Tory MPs have spent the last year blocking tough new laws on water companies. They are trying to take the British public for fools with harsh talk and no action.

"Communities across the country are fed up with Conservative MPs who would rather protect water companies than their local environment."
