Rebel Tory MPs reportedly sent censure letters to Liz Truss to the 1922 Committee in a bid to get rid of her as Prime Minister.

The number of letters already sent is "substantial", according to Sky News.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee - a group of backbench MPs which oversees the election of party leaders - is believed to be currently on vacation but will be receiving the letters to his return Monday.

Rebel Tory MPs are apparently urging colleagues to submit letters expressing their defiance of Ms Truss to give Sir Brady a mandate to change the rules of the leadership election process.

The rules could be changed to increase the number of supporters required to show up on the first ballot of a leadership contest from 20 to 100. This would mean that only the most popular candidate would make it through first step and would effectively be crowned leader of the Conservative Party.

MPs have speculated that a joint Rishi Sunak-Penny Mordaunt ticket could exceed the 100-vote threshold.

They also believe that if enough letters are sent, Sir Brady would have the power to go to Mrs Truss and tell her to resign.

An MP told The Times that the Tories could start publicly demanding Ms Truss out on Monday.

The Daily Mailreported that MPs were privately sounding out their colleagues ahead of a coup attempt to overthrow the Prime Minister.

A group of around 20 'poppadom plotters' gathered over curry at Parliament's Portcullis House to discuss how they could get rid of Ms Truss.

There have reportedly been talks of asking former Tory leaders to sign a joint statement calling for Ms Truss to step down.

"It's not just about the survival of the government or even the Conservative Party," a source said.

"People are suffering in the real world from the incompetence we've seen - I have friends who can't get a new mortgage. We have a duty to stop this and restore a basic level of proficiency."

MPs discussed whether the Cabinet or Sir Brady could be persuaded to tell Ms Truss her time was up, the newspaper reported.
