Antonio Conte is desperate to improve his record in Europe with Spurs

The traveling Marseille side were behind agonizing scenes at Tottenham Hotspur's stadium after facing Spurs on Matchday 1 of the Champions League group stage.

Fans tried to break into the home and clash with the Tottenham faithful, with the incident occurring after Spurs' 2-0 win, while it is also understood they have launched missiles and flares towards the home fans. Video footage has since emerged online showing Marseille supporters tearing down a pride flag hanging from the corner of the ground.

Spurs fans could do little more than express their disgust at the conduct of their French counterparts as stewards and police tried to put an end to the trouble. Former Newcastle and Manchester City star Joey Barton was part of the away team for the clash; although there is no suggestion that he was involved in the disreputable scenes.

Barton has had close ties with the French outfit since a season-long loan spell at the Stade Vélodrome during the 2012/13 campaign. He is clearly still highly regarded by Marseille fans who showered him with chants and affection throughout the encounter.

Antonio Conte's Tottenham lost 2-0 thanks to a brace from summer signing Richarlison. Marseille were forced to play the majority of the second half with ten men after Chancel Mbemba Mangulu received a red card for a tackle on Heung-Min Son.

Marseille held on for a while and did well to keep the score 0-0 for as long as they did, but eventually the host pressure kicked in and Richarlison scored his first goal in European football's elite club competition.
