Many opted for the second option, which would include three months of severance, leading the company to temporarily close its offices as hundreds of employees quit, according to reports. reports.

Twitter also announced that it was temporarily suspending all badge access until Monday, November 21, asking staff to "refrain from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or somewhere else".

According to a survey on the Blind business app of 180 people, 42% chose the answer "By opting out, I'm free!" Reuters reported on November 18. In another poll, half of respondents estimated that 50% of staff would leave.

Employees aren't the only ones fleeing Twitter in Musk's wake, as users have sought alternatives. One of these was recently unveiled, Mastodon, which has seen a surge in new signups.

The decentralized social network is a federation of independently operated interconnected servers running on open source software.
