UK snow maps show areas with 90% chance as Met Office gives Beast from East verdict

Britons are facing a 90% chance of snowfall this week, according to prediction models, as a biting cold front is set to sweep across the UK.

The Met Office has confirmed that a major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event has occurred, the effects of which will arrive early next month.

There are also likely to be widespread snow showers up to over 30cm deep in central and northern Scotland.

Maps from WXCharts now suggest there is a significant possibility of snow falling in parts of the UK on Saturday, then easing on Sunday.

Weather maps show an estimated 85-95% chance of the white stuff hitting Scotland in the early morning, spreading to parts of northern England, the Midlands and Wales around noon.

The chance of snowfall in the southeast and southwest is considerably lower, with areas having a 20-55% chance.

It wobbles through to Sunday, with the highest chance of snowfall in the north of England around 6am.

The Met Office has also predicted possible snow showers in the south early next week, as a cold front moves across the UK this weekend.

As for Saturday, Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "Temperatures will be around average or slightly below as we head into the weekend with the cold front crossing the UK, allowing colder winds to arrive in the UK.
