Unstable weather conditions are expected over the next few days, with sunny spells giving way to thunderstorms and the return of frost.

Sunshine interspersed with heavy thundery showers is expected today, while Sunday will see widespread frost in the morning.

The Met Office has advised that the weather will remain unsettled with windy conditions at times.

Mild conditions are expected in most parts of the UK today, with northern Scotland being the coldest.

Average temperatures are expected on Sunday, despite a freezing start to the day.

Over the next week, heavy showers are expected to return, with wintry conditions, such as high winds and coastal gales, extending the colder weather well into spring.

Jim Dale, senior meteorologist for the UK Meteorological Service, agreed the weather should be changeable by next week.

He said: "The rest of the week and into the middle of the next, the weather will be changeable and mostly mild. Rain at intervals, at times (as now) heavy in the west, although most of the weekend end to come."

Despite the cold conditions at the end of March, he added that the UK had potentially the last snowfall.
