Venice 2023: Korine's 'Aggro Dr1ft' is one of the dumbest films of all time

Aggro Dr1ft Review

This will unfortunately attract more attention. I am well aware that this title in a review is going to attract all kinds of people who will say that it makes them want to watch the movie even more. Nothing I can say will deter these people, they are curious no matter what. That's how I went to see the movie – I have to go see it just to see it, even though I really expect it to be crap. And it's crap. A worthless, shameful trash film that has no place in any film festival. But a few festivals this year scheduled it anyway, because they couldn't help but think that "edgy" EDGLRD bullshit like this is necessary to show at a festival to be "early". " on the next trends in cinema. Aggro Dr1ft won't have any impact on cinema, nor will it become a trend, and anyway, it won't even be remembered in a few years... Now I completely understand why rapper Travis Scott didn't. I don't want to endorse Harmony Korine releasing this movie - he's ashamed to be part of it. And I can sympathize with him. It would be best for everyone to bury this movie now.

The latest from director Harmony Korine, Aggro Dr1ft is an 80-minute feature film shot entirely in infrared. This means it looks very colorized and unnecessarily obscured (see image above). Why shoot like that? Why the hell not, I guess, he wondered. There's really no point in making a movie that way. Did he get high and make this up? I had to look at Aggro Dr1ft because maybe, just maybe, there is thematic interest in using this visual style. There are not any. It's miserable and has no function or purpose other than to piss off most people. Half the room went out during my screening in Venice. When I was young and we bought our first camcorder in the 90s, my brother and I played with it and pressed all the buttons on the side, activating filters like "invert". We were trying to shoot a few things that way, soon realizing that it looked so stupid and no one would want to watch more than 30 seconds of footage shot like this. Decades later, Korine apparently had the “brilliant” idea to make an entire movie like this.

I spoke to a woman sitting near me who surprised me at the next screening. "That was garbage," I blurted out emphatically. "Beyond trash," she replied. Yeah. I don't quite understand how Korine could stoop so low and do something so repugnant. He made some good movies! I love Spring Breakers and The Beach Bum, two films also about very stupid people, but they still have some clever philosophical ideas embedded in the commentary. It seems that the answer is not so difficult to find. Korine has admitted in new interviews at this year's Locarno Film Festival that he's just not interested in most movies anymore. "Watching a lot of this bullshit, you really feel the algorithms… [So] I'm going to see a clip on TikTok that's so inexplicable, so outside the realm of what I even imagine someone is creating. For example , I can experience a 30-second clip that goes far beyond "what the movies do for him (via Variety). It's a sign that he's lost his mind and he's not even cares more about doing anything cinematic. This lazy, disgusting film is the result of his lack of interest in cinema – that should be enough to convince most not to waste their time trying to watch Aggro Dr1ft..p>

The only defense I've heard from other reviewers is that it's deliberately stupid to serve as commentary and break the "assassin" genre and hitman tropes. Most of the film involves two assassins, played by Jordi Mollà and Travis Scott, walking around and repeating phrases like "I'm the greatest assassin in the world" over and over again. Better dialogues have been scribbled in pencil by kindergartners who are just learning to put words together for the first time. This supposed "breakup" of violent hitmen is really just an empty amalgamation of scenes where they talk about violence, being badass, loving their families, making money and spending a good moment. They drive speedboats and watch women t...
