VentureBeat is the latest publication to use AI in its articles

The use of technology is limited this time.

More and more outlets are using AI to write stories, if not as aggressively as others. Michale Nuñez, editorial director of VentureBeat, tells Bloomberg that his publication uses Microsoft's Bing chat to help him edit and write articles. Journalists are encouraged to slip AI-written "sentences and fragments" into stories as long as they are independently verifiable and accurate.

OpenAI-powered technology is like having "another person on the team," says Nuñez. It theoretically summarizes content in seconds instead of hours. VentureBeat does not disclose use of AI content provided it is limited and genuine, but also does not intend to create entire articles using the technology.

Rumors surfaced in January that CNET had been using AI to produce comprehensive financial explainers since November. Although qualified as essays, more than half of the articles required at least minor corrections. Some have actually plagiarized their sources. It was also not clear that any algorithms produced the coins.

Generative AI like Bing Chat, ChatGPT, and Google Bard has become increasingly popular as a creative tool, for search results, and even for entertainment. However, there are ethical issues that include plagiarism, basic accuracy, and cheating. There are also questions of trust – should creators disclose uses of AI, even if they are minor and undetectable? While the wider news industry is not expected to completely replace human writers, there are concerns that AI may be used to reduce the need for real people.
