Russian expert says 'we are losing a lot of people'

Public opinion on Vladimir Putin is souring and people on the streets of Moscow are speaking out against the Russian leader as the war in Ukraine enters its ninth month.

Russians aired their feelings on Radio Free Europe, many spoke of a looming crisis in the country, and one person even said they could see no gain in the war, saying, "I only see losses."

A young woman said that all her friends were afraid of the mobilization. She said they were hiding or leaving the country.

Another young Russian added: "There have been sanctions, and some brands have left the country. At some point, it will cause a crisis here. It will hit Russia harder than other countries."

A Russian army veteran, who fought in Chechnya, complained about the treatment of soldiers: "What did I get in return? A pension of $50 a month. How how are you?"

A middle-aged man told Radio Free Europe, "Russia lost the lives of its soldiers. What did it gain? For me personally, the losses outweigh the gains."

Another man echoed his remarks, saying Russia had lost its friends and its reputation.

As the majority of those interviewed were critical of the war, one man summed up the situation: "Russia has gained nothing at all. The grief of mothers and young people dying on both sides. Many civilians have been killed."
