Russian special forces 'trapped' an injured dog in a bid to spread terror in a Ukrainian town they left months ago.

Spetsnaz GRU saboteurs are said to have launched a covert campaign of terror far from the front line in a desperate attempt to break civilian morale.

The dog had been beaten until he could barely move and hooked up to a bomb, so civilians would come to his aid and be blown up.

But residents of Makariv, northwest of Kyiv, called in Ukrainian demining experts to rescue the trapped dog.

The dog, whose owner cannot be found, has been named Fox and is recovering.
