Conservatives will ignore at their peril the outpouring of public anger over plans to close hundreds of train ticket offices.

In next year's election, voters will not forgive the government if it allows this act of massive vandalism to continue. They understand the important role that ticketing staff play in helping passengers make their journey and supporting frail and disabled customers. If the closures continue, thousands of jobs will disappear and another part of the glue that binds our society together will be weakened.

The government was first alerted more than five years ago to the dangerous state of school buildings in England. Ministers have been warned that lives could be put at risk unless they tackle the problems caused by lightweight concrete. Just yesterday, the Ministry of Education finally took action by announcing the immediate closure of more than a hundred schools, nurseries and colleges.

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan let students and their parents down by ordering this mass evacuation just days before the new term. The Tories claim to value education, but they starved schools of funds, failed to recruit enough teachers and oversaw an £11billion backlog in building repairs. The crumbling state of the school estate is a symbol of how the Tories have ruined this country.
