Watch: Captivating short film shows us 'How to make a magazine'

How to make a magazine

"You have to think about it for days or even weeks in advance what you want to print on paper. The act itself is pretty simple." Hometown has launched a short documentary titled How to Make a Magazine, a supplement to the latest issue of their magazine titled "Hometown Journal". Hometown is a Berlin-based director and DP duo consisting of Jan Eric Hühn & Alex Schuchmann. They decided to start a new magazine and this short film takes an abstract and artistic look at this process. It mixes images of the German printing company working on the preparation of the magazine, as well as images of photos + pages of the magazine, with voiceovers from various contributors: photographers, writers, etc. I wish there was more emphasis on the printing process, but it works so well as an engrossing 6 minute film that it's not worth criticizing. Most of the process of printing a magazine (or book) is automated and uses complex machinery, but it's always nice to see them producing something physical, something you can pick up, hold, read and take away.

Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this movie available online. Synopsis via Vimeo: "With this film, we set out to bring the printing process back into our consciousness. The fast-paced nature of the internet has many advantages, but it also has some disadvantages. The state of the eternal, the imperishable and the analog have attracted us since we started making films and we wanted to combine these goals with bookbinding and filmmaking." How to Make a Magazine is a short documentary created and shot by the duo known as "Hometown" - Berlin filmmakers Jan Eric Hühn and Alex Schuchmann who have just launched a magazine called "Hometown Journal" - which is "intended to educate and unify, lifting taboos on unspoken topics that concern us all". You can see more of their work on their Vimeo or follow them on IG @hometown_____. Music by Max Marius Dick and Band & Stckman with Kyle Quest and Bone Slim. Produced by Hometown.
