What a summer! : readers' favorite discoveries in 2022

We have finished well, Iceland It is in the cove of Eyjafjördur, facing the Arctic, 20 minutes by ferry from Árskógssandur, north of Akureyri, the fourth largest city in Iceland. We completed the crossing well, before following a 6 km path around the south of the island. The islanders we encountered were warmly welcomed, but the birds were the star. Ptarmigan thrive here at sea level - they seemed almost tame. We also encountered fascinating history: fish drying racks, old tractors and the marvelous Shark-Jörundur house, built in 1885-86 with timber from Norwegian ships that landed at Hrísey in 1884. We gained such a sense of the old way of living here. Paul Gamble
