Wide industrial unrest could open the door to strikes in "all sectors of the economy", a union boss has warned, sparking speculation of a general strike.

Mick Lynch has said the ongoing rail dispute, which has seen thousands of workers leave today in the latest in a series of strikes over the summer, could be prolonged "indefinitely".< /p>

The general secretary of the RMT union refrained from predicting a general strike, saying: "It's not in my power, it's in the [Trade Union Congress] TUC".

His remarks come less than 24 hours after Royal Mail workers voted overwhelmingly to strike in a second ballot on terms and conditions - with around eight days of action expected.
