Wheely Wild: Discover the joys of Croatia on a "bike cruise"

A wild fitness cruise on wheels: sail and cycle every day and you'll discover the joys of Croatia in a whole new waySara Macefield's cruise sails through the "extraordinarily pretty" Dalmatian islandsWhen the ship docks , she explores islands such as Mljet and Korcula by bike Her Sail Croatia itinerary includes challenging daily bike rides up to 30 miles in length

After stubbornly pedaling uphill for what seems like a lifetime with only the sound of my own gasping for company, I am suddenly aware of a wave of applause and shouts of encouragement.

Looking up in surprise, I see my fellow cyclists, who have already arrived at the crest of this monster mountain (OK, it's a hill, but for me it has taken on proportions similar to those of Everest) stands at the side of the road, encouraging me for the home stretch.

It's a comforting touch that makes the culmination of the winding seven-mile climb up to 1,400 feet on the Croatian island of Hvar all the sweeter - especially when I'm surveying the magnificent views.

Better yet, the sprint to the other side. "It's not a race," calls our cycling guide Vania as we speed like demons, relishing the exhilarating ride through the port town of chi-chi, also known as Hvar, to join our three-masted motor yacht Princeza Diana.

We are halfway through a bicycle cruise d week through the extraordinarily pretty Dalmatian islands, scattered like precious emeralds in the Adriatic Sea.

There are 32 of us, mostly North Americans, a handful of Australians and about eight Britons - most in their 50s and 60s. What binds us is our enthusiasm and our experience of cycling. This is not a voyage for novices.

Princeza Diana is a comfortable haven with 16 traditionally furnished cabins (ours has bunk beds and a double bed, plus an incredibly spacious en-suite shower), plenty of room for sunbathing and a bubbling hot tub - the perfect place to soothe those aching muscles.
