Workers risk being slapped with £43bn in extra taxes if the Tories stay in power, Rachel Reeves has warned.

As the new fiscal year begins today, the Shadow Chancellor accuses the government of looting people's wages during their 13 years in office.

Analysis shows that over the next four years the money taken from PAYE income tax receipts and National Insurance contributions will be £43 billion more than what it was in 2010.

That works out to £2,345 per active household.

This comes as families are hit by other hikes, including the council tax hike that came into effect on Saturday.

Average council tax bills are set to top £2,000 for the first time as households are overwhelmed by a 5.1% increase. from £99 on the 2022-23 figure of £1,966.

Labour is calling on the government to introduce a windfall tax on oil and gas giants to pay for a municipal tax freeze this year to ease the cost of living crisis.

Ms Reeves said: 'The Conservatives have overseen the highest tax burden since World War II, economic failure and plummeting growth.

"They abandoned all responsibility for cleaning up their own mess after bringing down the economy. Never have workers paid so much and received so little in return.

"After 13 years of Conservative government, all they have to show is economic failure, public services on their knees, high taxes and low growth
