ImageDebris landed in the Kiev zoo, but the mayor said no animals were harmed. their country's air defense system had intercepted six Kinzhal hypersonic missiles that were targeting the Ukrainian capital, kyiv. If confirmed, it would be further proof of Ukraine's ability to bring down one of Russia's most sophisticated weapons.

The attack has was one of Russia's largest airstrikes since March: Ukraine says Russia fired an "exceptional" blitz of missiles and drones into Kiev, but shot down all the Kinzhals. Russia says a missile hit an American-made Patriot system.

The problems that have plagued Russia's 15-month war since its inception do not only to get worse: limited resources, disorganized defenses and disunity in the ranks. These would seem to be bad weeks for President Vladimir Putin.

Already the Russian military has been forced into multiple retreats, and since last year it is largely blocked along the 600-mile front line. Russian forces were recently pushed back from their positions on the outskirts of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, where the Russian Defense Ministry said two colonels were lost in action. And Ukraine's long-awaited counter-offensive hasn't even begun.

Yet Putin's resolve indicates he is preparing for a war that could well last for years.
