AI-generated music is a topic of discussion at the moment, especially now that more users seem to be turning to AI music on Spotify. One such artist, who managed to rack up millions of streams, convinced her listeners that she is fully AI.
Neo-soul singer Sienna Rose has burst onto the scene, gaining an impressive 3.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and three spots on Spotify’s Viral Top 50. Despite this dazzling success, I hate to tell you, it’s likely that she’s not real at all.
There are many reasons why people believe his music and personality are a product of AI, but music streaming service Deezer has put it in black and white by reporting all of its content as AI-generated. We contacted Deezer for comment, who said the following:
“We can confirm that the majority of Sienna Rose albums on Deezer are detected and clearly identified as AI-generated using our AI detection tool. As AI music becomes more widespread, we believe it is vitally important to be transparent with listeners and fair to artists, which is why Deezer removes all fully AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, so users can take informed decisions about what they listen to.
Usually, it’s pretty easy to spot what music is AI-generated in streaming services — release dates and album art are often big clues — but Sienna Rose is an interesting case. On the surface, her music seems convincing, and she’s managed to fool A-list celebrities, including Selena Gomez, who used one of Rose’s songs in a post that was later deleted.
You can’t ignore the signs
Beyond Deezer’s AI music labels, there’s so much more to Rose’s musical personality that simply screams “AI,” with her sound being a major indicator that she’s adopted among Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, and even Olivia Dean.
In addition to the influx of music she’s released (she released more than 45 songs between September 28 and December 5 according to the BBC), listeners were quick to point out the “generic” sound of her songs, reporting bland lyric choices, inconsistent beats, and “telltale whistling” in a number of her songs — all of which are common tropes found in AI-generated music.
Then there’s his lack of social media presence. When it comes to AI artists, another clue is social media, from which Rose is virtually absent, but recent videos have surfaced from accounts claiming to be her – like the TikTok video below, which currently has 2.3 million views.
Seems relatively normal, right? But there are some things that just don’t add up.
What I can’t get over is the number of followers (3,867 on TikTok at the time of writing), because if you were surely an artist surpassing popular artists such as Djo, A$AP Rocky and PinkPantheress on the Spotify charts, you would surely amass a rapidly growing online following. Looks like someone is being very careful.
But there’s a video (see below) on Sienna Rose’s Instagram account that’s the cherry on top of the theory that her entire existence is AI-generated. The video, which shows Rose appearing on a podcast that has no name, social tags and an unrecognizable host with blank expressions and wandering eyes.
The theories went in two different directions. Some believed that Rose was a legitimate person who was simply using AI to create music, but more people were convinced that her entire existence was itself a product of AI. After listening to her music and watching every video I could find of her, I’m siding with the latter, and now we have confirmation from Deezer that sets her in stone.
