“We are moving in a different direction.” This was shared with me when I arrived at work on my last day two months ago. I was shocked, stunned, hurt, angry and in disbelief when I heard those words. I was laid off from a job I had only held for nine months. In all my years of work, I have never been fired before and felt completely blindsided. While trying to remain calm, I asked a few follow-up questions and quickly cleared my things into my office. I was not allowed to say goodbye and conclude in the way that seemed most appropriate and professional to me.
My emotions were all over the place and I had more questions than answers. I asked God, “Why this and why now?” I didn’t understand why this was happening for someone who always tries to give his best and has a strong work ethic. After crying and trying to calm down, I went home and was very grateful for the support of my husband, family and friends.
You are not alone if you have experienced a sudden or unexpected job loss. Although the pain of losing a job may seem unbearable, don’t give up hope. God has not forgotten you; He sees and understands your pain and will help you heal, move forward and overcome. God will use your pain to propel you further toward His greater purpose for your life. Healing will take time and a desire to stay connected to God’s Word, but it is available. Here are five ways God will heal you after a job loss:

1. God will heal your broken heart
Psalm 34:18 states, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those whose spirit is broken.” »
When I lost my job, my heart was broken and I was in pain. I was distraught because I didn’t understand why this was happening to me. You may be experiencing a job loss and you don’t know how you’re going to pick up the pieces. The good news is that God promises to heal and restore our broken hearts. God hears our cries, wipes away our tears, and strengthens our body, mind, and spirit. Even though we feel like this season of grief may not end, there is hope on the other side of this loss. God has not abandoned you and has a plan for you to move forward. Your God-given identity is not defined or decided by a job title or profession, but by who you are in Christ.
If you allow the Holy Spirit to comfort you through prayer and God’s Word, God will revive your broken heart and spirit. Today I invite you to acknowledge your pain, share your struggles with God, and surrender your broken heart to Him. Seek professional counseling if necessary and let God mend your heart. In God’s chosen timing and ways, He will help encourage and revitalize your heart.

2. God will provide a new opportunity
An unexpected job loss often results in a reduction in income that immediately affects the individual and their family. After losing my job, I wondered how I could contribute financially to my personal and family needs. During my times of anxiety, God soothed my mind and reminded me that He has always provided for my needs and will continue to do so. When I was deciding my attitude and mind, I thought about how God was meeting my needs when I couldn’t see a way. Philippians 4:19 declares: “And my God will supply all your need according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. » God will provide you with another opportunity to use your gifts and skills and will also provide financially for you and your family. The new opportunity will often be unexpected and will allow you to continue to use and develop the gifts God has given you.
After a job loss, it’s easier to remain bitter or irritated by the way things have turned out, but it’s also essential to remain open to the many new doors that God wants to open. Today I invite you to be open to God’s new and fresh opportunities. Don’t let pain and frustrations from your past or job loss keep you from receiving God’s newness for you. God assures us that He will always provide for His children.

3. God will provide support and community
Experiencing a job loss can be devastating and very isolating at this time. Even though you know that others have been through this situation, you may feel like you will never recover. I am so grateful to have the encouragement, support and presence of my family and close friends to help strengthen me when I am down. When I wanted to withdraw, feel sorry for myself, and stay disconnected, God used my family and friends to lift my spirit and remind me that there is still hope. God’s plans are always to prosper and not harm you and me (Jeremiah 29:11). God created us to have positive relationships, and powerful healing is found in forming community.
It doesn’t take many people to form an uplifting and supportive community. Connect with a friend or two for a meal or prayer, or send an encouraging verse. God wants us to be able to count on each other for support. Galatians 6:2 states: “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” » Be creative and ask God to help you receive the community He offers you. Today I invite you to look for how God heals you through community.

4. God will listen to your questions and cries
When I lost my job, I had more questions than answers, and I didn’t feel like I could move on. Despite my challenge with losing my job, I cried out to God with my anger, questions, fear, and anxieties. We don’t need to water down or filter our true emotions when approaching God. We can come to God when we are broken, confused, hurt, angry, or sad. There is nothing we have not experienced with which God is not able to sympathize and comfort us. As you deal with the real emotions and consequences of job loss, I encourage you to seek the truth of God’s Word. Be Affirmed With Life Giving promises of God‘sword. Today I invite you to talk honestly to God and share whatever is in your heart and mind: the good, the raw, and the uncomfortable. He can handle it and wants you to come to him.
1 Peter 5:7 says, “Take all your anxiety out on him because he cares about you. »
God wants us to come to Him with all our anxieties because He cares about us so much. Come to God boldly and he will listen to you with love.

5. God will restore your spirit
God will restore and rejuvenate your spirit after a job loss. God will provide for your needs whether you are seeking peace, comfort, or a renewed sense of hope. The process may not happen overnight or seem linear or pretty, but God is with and for you. Look for unexpected ways in which God will lift you up. It could be encouraging writing, a listening ear, or a new opportunity aligned with your gifts and ongoing purpose. Don’t get discouraged and let go of the enemy’s tactics to keep you in a cycle of anxiety, depression, isolation, or negative self-talk.
Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not be faint; they will walk and not be faint.”
God makes all things new and the Holy Spirit can transform your spirit and reinvigorate what was once broken.
Today I want to encourage you that there is hope and healing after job loss. During times of discouragement, doubt, or anxiety, remember that God will heal your broken heart, give you new opportunity, restore your spirit, and give you support and community. It may seem like a never-ending season and you may still have more questions than answers. The good news is that God has not forgotten you and His plans for your future are still useful and bright.
