It was an era defined by glossy teen magazines, Friday night TV rituals, and unforgettable pop culture moments that still live freely in our minds today. Now, one influencer is turning that nostalgia into a dynamic digital experience, bringing those treasured memories back to life for thousands of followers online.
What started as a sentimental moment after seeing photos of her grandmother’s renovated house quickly turned into something much bigger. Inspired by the idea of revisiting her childhood, she began digging through old photos and memories. On a whim, she shared a vintage magazine on TikTok, and the response was immediate. Viewers were excited to revisit pages they once loved, and its nostalgic content quickly found a loyal and enthusiastic audience on TikTok and Instagram.

Meghan: What inspired you to start your journey as an influencer?
Shaina: I’ve always been a pretty nostalgic person. I’ve had a nostalgia-themed Tumblr account since 2016, but it’s really taken off for me in 2021 on TikTok. It’s a rather funny and sad story. One day my mother showed me what the inside of my grandmother’s house looked like after people renovated it. It made me very nostalgic and I started going through my old stuff and photos. That’s when I decided to publish a thumbnail magazine on TikTok, and people loved it! I was doing pretty well on TikTok and decided to also start on Instagram to reach more people with my nostalgia.
Meghan: Was there a defining moment when you realized this could become more than just a hobby?
Shaina: I’m not sure I can think of a specific moment. Especially when I see how many people are excited about old magazines and catalogs. Even celebrities have commented and even sent me messages about them! This makes me realize that I need to keep posting them so they aren’t forgotten. It’s very rewarding to be able to unlock a memory for someone. There are so many things from our childhood that we tend to forget.
Meghan: Why is it important to you personally to look back at the 1990s and the Y2K era?
Shaina: Back then, things seemed so much more comforting and safe. Things changed in my life at a very young age, so looking back and thinking about a time that brought me a lot of joy helps me feel calmer and I can escape the craziness of reality for a moment.
Meghan: Who were some of your favorite stars in the 1990s, and are there any influencers today who give you the same energy?
Shaina: Oh my God, there were so many! I mean, growing up with Mary-Kate and Ashley, they had a huge influence on me! I also loved Christina Ricci, Larisa Oleynik, Melissa Joan Hart, Claire Danes, Danielle Fishel, I could go on! When it comes to today’s influencers, some like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Zendaya have made a huge impact on today’s younger generation.
Meghan: What show from ABC’s TGIF lineup was your favorite growing up, and what made it stand out to you?
Shaina: Sabrina, the apprentice witch without fail!! Also A boy meets the world, step by step, and I can’t forget Two of a kindeven though it was only one season. Back then, they really knew how to make good TV shows!
I mean, Sabrina was a favorite because I loved everything about witches, but also because she was approachable when it came to being different and just trying to fit in at school. A boy meets the world was such a relatable and enjoyable show about relationships, like best friends, girlfriends and boyfriends, siblings, parents and teachers. Step by step It was hilarious, the comedy was great on that show! Two of a kind because of Mary-Kate and Ashley, of course! The whole night of TGIF was literally an event every week for people, and I wish we still had something like that.
Meghan: What valuable life lessons do you think TV shows from the 1990s and early 2000s can teach today’s youth through streaming platforms?
Shaina: Basically just having a big heart and enjoying time with your friends and loved ones, and being there for them when they need you. Also, be kind and have empathy towards others.
Meghan: If you could travel back in time to the 1990s, who would you most want to meet and why?
Shaina: It’s a tough decision! I mean, my little me would probably want to meet JT, Devon Sawa and all the boy bands! In fact, I’ve met so many 90s celebrities over the past few years because of 90s Con. I even got to meet Shannen Doherty before she passed away.
Meghan: What 1990s or millennial teen magazine was your favorite to read?
Shaina: Oh man, I think maybe I should say both Bop And Seventeen review. These two are probably the most nostalgic for me. I had a subscription to both. But they were all awesome in their own way! I loved them all. I would sit at the magazine rack while my mother shopped, look through them, then beg her for one. If she said yes, it was so hard to choose the right one!
Meghan: How do you find some of your most iconic items from the 1990s, or are they entirely from your personal collection?
Shaina: Some objects date from my childhood. I wish I had kept a lot more than I had! The rest I purchased from various sources like thrift stores, flea markets, eBay, Mercari, friends on Instagram, Facebook Marketplace, and antique stores!
