Sony announces R-rated Bloodborne animated film

Sony is officially returning to the world of video game adaptations with an R-rated twist.

During his CinemaCon presentation MondaySony Pictures announced that Transmitted by bloodone of The greatest PlayStation gamesis in development to become an R-rated animated feature film. The project is produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, with content creator and longtime fan Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin also on board as producer. Lyrical Media, the parent company of Lyrical Animation, is co-financing the project alongside Sony.

Although plot and casting details are being kept under wraps, the game helps give a sense of the tone the audience can expect. The original Bloodborne game follows a lone traveler navigating a haunting gothic city overrun by twisted mobs and terrifying creatures lurking around every corner. Known for its extreme difficulty and deeply complex story, the game has built a devoted fan base over the years, with many players still pondering its mysteries long after the game’s release.

That reputation is one of the main reasons the adaptation is already generating buzz. Considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all timeBloodborne was developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, with its atmospheric world perfectly suited to an animated format capable of bringing its horror elements to the big screen. The decision to get the R rating also indicates that Sony isn’t holding back when it comes to capturing the game’s dark and brutal tone.

Involving McLoughlin also adds to the intrigue. With over 48 million followers across his platforms, the content creator has spent years playing and discussing games like Bloodborne, making him a unique bridge between the fan community and the film’s creative team.

Transmitted by blood is the latest in a growing line of PlayStation adaptations as Sony continues to expand its gaming intellectual property into film and television. The workshop recently announced a Helldiverse movie directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa, scheduled for release in 2027. Previous collaborations include Unexploredwhich grossed more than $400 million worldwide, Peacock’s Twisted Metal series and HBO’s critically acclaimed film The last of uswhich helped set a new standard for video game adaptations.

The release date of the animated project has not yet been announced.
