New York talk boosts 2000 Guineas hopes with impressive win at Newmarket
April 15, 2026 – The 2026 flat racing season kicked off at Newmarket on the first day of the Betway Craven Meeting, and it didn’t take long for a leading Classic contender to emerge.
Let’s talk about New Yorktrained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, produced an impressive performance to win the Federation Of Bloodstock Agents EBF Conditions Stakes over seven furlongs, placing himself firmly in the frame for next month’s Betfred 2000 Guineas.
Strong return to form at Newmarket
The son of Wootton Bassett made a strong impression by winning on his debut at Kempton Park last October. However, his winter campaign in Dubai failed to meet expectations, finishing third in the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas at Meydan.
Back at home and fitted with a balaclava for the first time, the 8-11 favorite looked a different proposition. Traveling smoothly throughout, he asserted entering the final furlong before stretching out to record a comfortable three-length success over Lost Signal.
Following the performance, Betfred reduced their odds to 6-1 for the 2000 Guineas on May 2.
Appleby: “A work in progress with a big engine”
Trainer Charlie Appleby was encouraged by the performance but stressed there was more to come from the progressive colt.
“I was quite happy watching the race. Even if he had been beaten, as long as he had calmed down I wouldn’t have been too worried,” Appleby said.
“It’s still a work in progress. He’s a nice horse with a big engine, but he just needs to be managed. The hood and the return at seven furlongs helped him settle in today, and we saw the benefits of that.”
Appleby also suggested that headgear should not be retained for the Guineas.
“We’ve been working him in the hood and that’s taking away the edge, but I’d be inclined to take him off for the Guineas. He’s a completely different horse since he came back from Dubai.”
The Dubai experience, key to development
The race in Dubai, although disappointing on paper, could prove crucial for the colt’s development.
Appleby admitted the experience had highlighted areas that needed improvement, particularly around tuning and adapting to the pace of the race.
“He only had two gears in Dubai and we had to ride him regularly. He was too fresh and hadn’t been trained as effectively as we would have liked,” he explained.
“Since he’s been back here, he’s gotten back into the routine and has been a lot easier to train.”
Buick: “Exactly what we wanted”
Jockey William Buick echoed the trainer’s positivity, describing the performance as an ideal springboard.
“It was exactly what we wanted. It was a race where he and we could learn,” Buick said.
“Dubai was difficult for him, but he has more experience now. It was a real gallop from start to finish today, which suited him and he showed his quality.”
Buick also highlighted fitness and experience as key factors behind improved performance.
“He lacked match training in Dubai, but he still ran well. He’s a big horse who moves at a high pace, and the training style here suits him better.”
The image of the Guineas is taking shape
Talk Of New York now looks set to become a major player in the Betfred 2000 Guineas, with Appleby considering several options for the Classic.
Stablemates including Distant Storm, King’s Trail and Hidden Force are also being evaluated, as the trainer looks to finalize his team for the Rowley Mile showpiece.
“He is very present in the picture of the Guineas,” Appleby confirmed. “We’ll finish this week and then start putting the pieces together.”
