Chip stocks are rebounding on Monday, but that rebound doesn’t mean tech investors are in the clear.
THE PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) suffered its fifth single-day drop in history. When an industry that has effectively anchored the entire macrotech narrative moves with this kind of violence, we shouldn’t treat it as routine noise. To understand the gravity of Friday’s decision, you need to look at the other four instances of this infamous ranking:
The Tech Wreck (March 2000): First place belongs to the opening bell of the dot-com bear market. During this multi-year decline, SOX suffered two more blows of more than 10% in a single day, in October 2000 and July 2002.Pandemic Plunge (March 2020): The index lost nearly 11% on March 12 and a staggering 16% on March 16 as global liquidity evaporated.And now we add last Friday to the list.
The defining characteristic of the current market regime is speed. Whether this historic decline marks the start of a structural cyclical correction, as was the case in 2000 and the period immediately following, or simply an aggressive surge in liquidity, the path forward will not be a straight line. I remember vividly that the volatility in the later stages of the tech bubble increased even as stock prices reached new highs.
Pullbacks are healthy, but this type of price action is not particularly so. The whole saga reminds me of the old adage: buy protection when you can, not when you need it.
